We haven't looked at an Emporia device in a long while, but this specialist Austrian firm has designed and manufactured an impressive range of easy to use phones over recent years, and one of their latest handsets is the Emporia RL1, available now exclusively on Vodafone.

The technical feature list of the Emporia RL1 is almost ridiculously short, but the handset is designed around usability rather than gadgetry. So what does it do? Well, it makes phone calls, it comes with a phone book, calendar, calculator and alarm clock and that really is about it.

The display is a bright 1.8" OLED panel, mounted on top of some oversized and very clear buttons, and Emporia include a charging cradle. To charge the RL1, you simply need to pop it in the cradle, and this will keep the phone running for up to 8 days standby time and three hours talktime. The phone flashes and vibrates when it gets a call, in addition to the RL1's attention grabbing extra-loud ringing.

It's a good looking device, especially when docked in the cradle. And despite the big buttons, the phone itself is relatively lightweight and is still a convenient size to carry around.

At the moment, Vodafone in the UK have the Emporia RL1 for £60 with £10 of airtime, or it is free on contract. Vodafone in Germany and Spain are also selling the RL1, and it is possible that some other countries will carry it too.
